Zambia.
Where It All Begins.

We have operated in the Luangwa Valley and across Zambia for decades. This is not a destination we visit — it is where we live and work.

WHY ZAMBIA

The Continent's Most Authentic Safari Destination

Zambia offers something increasingly rare in modern Africa: genuine wilderness, strong wildlife populations, and a safari culture that has never prioritised volume over experience. The national parks are vast and under-visited. The operators are serious. The guides are among the finest on the continent.

Zambia is where the walking safari was born. It remains where it is done best.

African Paths began in Zambia, and it remains the centre of our expertise. We know the valley floor of South Luangwa in the dry season and the emerald flood of the Kafue in the rains. We know which camps to choose in which months — and we know the operators personally, not just by reputation.

ZAMBIA AT A GLANCE

Five national parks. Three great river systems. The continent's finest walking safari tradition. And a human-wildlife relationship that remains largely intact.

South Luangwa National Park

EASTERN ZAMBIA - THE CLASSIC

The heart of Zambia's safari tradition and the birthplace of the walking safari. South Luangwa offers one of Africa's highest concentrations of leopard and lion, extraordinary bird diversity, and an intimate camp culture that has attracted serious safari travelers for decades.

The Bushcamp Company — African Paths' primary partner in the valley — operates a celebrated circuit of intimate bush camps, each with a maximum of 8 guests, staffed by some of the finest walking safari guides on the continent.

Kafue National Park

WESTERN ZAMBIA - THE VAST

At 22,400 square kilometres, Kafue is one of Africa's largest national parks. Its scale is the point: here you can drive for an entire day without encountering another vehicle. Species diversity is extraordinary, ranging from cheetah and wild dog to sitatunga and puku.

The Busanga Plains in Kafue's north are among Africa's finest wildlife viewing environments, particularly in the dry season when concentrations of predator and prey are exceptional.

Lower Zambezi National Park

SOUTHERN ZAMBIA - THE RIVER

The Lower Zambezi is where safari goes to the water. Canoe safaris along the Zambezi River — with elephant and hippo at close quarters — represent one of Africa's most distinctive wildlife experiences. Private concessions border the park, offering exceptional exclusivity.

Elephants crossing the Zambezi at dawn. Lion drinking at the river's edge at last light. The Lower Zambezi offers moments found nowhere else in Africa.

Liuwa Plains National Park

WESTERN ZAMBIA - THE REMOTE

One of Africa's last true wildernesses and one of its best-kept secrets. Liuwa Plain hosts Africa's second-largest wildebeest migration, yet receives only a fraction of the visitors of the Serengeti. For travelers who want Africa without the crowds, Liuwa offers an experience that feels genuinely frontier.

THE WALKING SAFARI

Where the Walking Safari Was Born — and Remains Unmatched

The definitive South Luangwa experience, designed in partnership with The Bushcamp Company — the valley's pre-eminent safari operator. Eight nights moving through their celebrated circuit of intimate private bush camps. This is where Zambia's reputation for walking safaris was made, and where it remains unmatched anywhere on the continent.

On foot, everything changes. Distance collapses. Senses sharpen. The bush reveals itself differently.

South Luangwa remains the global benchmark for walking safaris. African Paths works exclusively with operators who share that philosophy.
